3.10: Valence Electrons

Valence electrons are the electrons in the highest occupied principal energy level of an atom. In the second period elements, the two electrons in the 1s 1 s sublevel are called inner-shell electrons and are not involved directly in the element's reactivity, or in the formation of compounds.

Energy Level, Shell, Subshell: Atomic Model

The letters s, p, d, and f stand for the various electron sublevels. Thus, for instance, the energy of electrons in the s sublevel of shell 3 differs from that of electrons in the p and d levels of shell 3. (Hydrogen is an exception to this rule. Since hydrogen only has one electron, all of its sublevels have the same energy.)

3.6: Aufbau Principle

The lowest energy sublevel is always the (1s) sublevel, which consists of one orbital. The single electron of the hydrogen atom will occupy the (1s) orbital when the atom is in its ground state. As we proceed to atoms with multiple electrons, those electrons are added to the next lowest sublevel: (2s), (2p), (3s), and so on.

Quantum Numbers and Electronic Structure

Each orbital within a particular sublevel is distinguished by its value of m l. This quantum number may be more aptly named the orbital orientation quantum number. In each energy sublevel (designated by l) there are 2l+1 possible independent orientations of the electron cloud. Each orientation is defined by a value of ml and is called an orbital.

Sublevels, s, p, d, and

The s, p, d, and f levels are also called energy sublevels. The s sublevel has one orbital, an 5 orbital. The p sublevel has three orbitals, x, y, and . The d sublevel has five orbitals and therefore a total capacity of ten electrons. Examine Figure 8.10 to see how the sublevel idea fits in with the concept of energy levels.
